Book #2 in ·Part of collection
When practical designer Malka scores her *very own* fixer-upper—a quirky, crumbling manor on the outskirts of a town so small the coffee shop doubles as the town hall, she’s thrilled to have something more permanent. The locals warn her: That place is deeply cursed, haunted ever since the mysterious "Butler of Doom," supposedly offed the original family before throwing himself down the stairs. But, as a devout skeptic, Malka is more likely to believe in affordable houseplants than ghosts. Her budget is tight, her to-do list is endless, and her only roommate so far is suspicious black mold. Everything changes when, behind a wall of 1870s wallpaper, Malka discovers a secretly stashed coffin in the basement. She briefly debates reviewing the home inspector on Yelp. But when she accidentally wakes up its glamorous but grumpy occupant—a vampire named Batya who’s been on a “nap” since WWI—Malka’s renovation plans spiral into chaos. Batya is snarky, hung up on Victorian etiquette, and photogenically brooding in a way that really messes with Malka’s focus. Going from “I don’t believe in ghosts” to “I split utilities with a vampire who can’t figure out the Internet” is a lot to process. Not to mention, Batya is extremely opinionated about open floor plans. Renovations become a series of slapstick mishaps as the duo dodges nosy neighbors, a meddling Mayor with an exorcist on speed dial, and, of course, their own growing attraction. Between paint samples, garlic-free recipes, and midnight heart-to-hearts, Malka realizes that sometimes the best things in life are the ones you never saw coming... or rising from your basement.
