There's a dead girl in the fine print of Kai's housing contract. HOW TO MAKE A HAUNTED HOUSE INTO A HOME: 1. figure out how to feed the birds on the windowsill 2. fix that leaky shower 3. find out WHY there are eyes following them in the vents... Kai’s new ghost roommate has forgotten her past life. Meanwhile, Kai has trouble living their current one due to their severe anxiety. Can Kai help this beautiful phantom recover her memories while confronting demons from their own past? And is the best roommate for an agoraphobe a beautiful phantomess?
I had so much fun reading this book! It's an absolute delight. It was exactly what I wanted from a cosy ghost fantasy story, and the horror elements were perfect.
I loved the references to necromancy. I especially loved the questionable sourcing of ingredients for that one spell, it had me giggling.
The relationship between GG and Kai was absolutely adorable. Kai's anxiety and agoraphobia were beautifully handled, and I loved their character development over the course of the novel. I loved how close Kai and GG got, and how used to occupying the same space they were. GG haunting the bathroom had me cackling.
The pacing was really fast paced and enjoyable, I felt like I was speeding through the book.
A gripping, thrilling story about gorgeous ghosts, agoraphobia, and the hazards of trusting your local internet necromancer.
But in all seriousness—I really relate to Kai. Though I mostly push through my fears of people and crowds and leaving the safety of my house through sheer necessity (gods, I would love a work from home job, even if it was all listicles) I would be lying if I said I'd never been curled up in my bed, wondering if it was worth it to even get groceries.
I have a living girl to help me on bad days, but I think Kai's pretty lucky to have their ghost girl, too.
I'm definitely not going to accept the quest from the necromancer who seems to have hacked my phone, though. Even it it works out, I just really don't think that's necessary. Kai might want to consider taking an internet safety class.
Overall, an adorable read with so much excitement and emotion and just. UGH. I loved every last page of this. I want to know what happens next, or at least get a post-epilogue or something idk.
Feels like it wasn't enough. Left me starving. 10/10.
This book was charming, relatable, and tender. It touched on these topics of mental health in such a real way- it left me aching. The kind of ache where you feel seen- through the characters challenges and emotions portrayed so acutely on the page.
This book stars a non-binary person- someone in my own life just came out to me- AND I happened to read this as spooky season hit- ahhhh. It was just perfect timing.
I needed the breath of fresh air that is a character like Kai. Someone who doesn’t see the strength and character and bravery inside themselves as anything extraordinary- It reminded me deeply of someone I love, and it was cool to get to know a character who faced such big struggles- but still were confident in who they were as a person in their identity. They also were not “fixed” in this story. Their identity and their mental health struggles stayed with them- good and bad days. Perfect moments and imperfect moments. I think that approach made this book very real and charming.
A light easy read that sucks you in by the time the ingredient collecting begins!
I did notice a couple small inconsistencies or errors, and I would have liked to see a bit more depth and polish in the ways of the writing itself, but I feel that was a both because I got an early copy and due to a style preference as I’m used to reading heavy intense stuff and this was more light- like a holiday read you can pick up and finish in a satisfying amount of time for the Halloween season! I also am a big fan of human work, and with human work comes all sorts of flavors and errors and I am someone who finds that endearing not off putting. It was an honor to be an early reader, and I hope that I get to return to these characters again in the future!
I think anytime someone is brave enough write a whole book- it should be honored. Thank you author for putting your world into words and for creating a refreshing work for us to add to our shelves.
I am OBSESSED with Gigi- the beloved ghost character- and I want to draw her, know her, be her… This book helped me get back into reading after a depressive phase myself, something the main characters treated so tenderly. I wish we all had a Gigi in our lives for those momenets. I’m glad this book was there for me in mine. I felt like they were in the room with me.
Very compelling and real characters that came to life for me during this read!
Cute fast paced spooky story with some tiny bit of romance, I really liked the concept and the message behind it. I just wish I could have read it during Halloween month for the vibes.
Lost a star because I wished there could have been more romance but I guess that’s a me thing expectation wise and not necessarily something bad about the story.
