Lyric poet from the island of Lesbos (c. 630–570 BCE) whose verses celebrated love, longing, and beauty between women.
Though most of her poetry survives only in fragments, her voice remains strikingly intimate and emotional. Her name and homeland gave rise to the words “sapphic” and “lesbian,” linking her forever with women’s love for women.
